What is OCD

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that affects how people think and behave. It’s like having a song stuck in your head, but instead of a song, it’s unwanted thoughts or worries that keep coming back. These thoughts can be really distressing and make people feel anxious or scared.

People with OCD often feel like they have to do certain things to make these thoughts go away or to stop something bad from happening. These things are called compulsions. For example, someone might feel like they have to wash their hands many times a day or check the door is locked repeatedly. These actions might give them temporary relief from their worries, but the thoughts and fears usually come back.

There isn’t one single cause of OCD, but it’s thought to be a combination of genetic, environmental, and neurological factors. Some people might have a family history of OCD or other mental health conditions. Stressful life events or changes can also trigger OCD symptoms in some people.

The symptoms of OCD can vary from person to person, but common signs include intrusive thoughts or images that feel out of control, excessive worrying about cleanliness, orderliness, or safety, and repetitive behaviors like counting, checking, or cleaning. These symptoms can interfere with daily life and relationships, but with the right treatment, like therapy or medication, many people with OCD can learn to manage their symptoms and live fulfilling lives.
